When Wunmi Bakare was 18 months old she was diagnosed with sickle cell disease. Over the course of her life, she was faced with critical medical events, limitations, and social stigma. In 2017 she received an allogeneic stem cell transplant during participation in a clinical trial the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NIH-NHLBI). The result was life changing. She now is an advocacy trailblazer in the sickle cell and rare disease communities, focused on erasing the stigma of sickle cell disease through engagement with the media. In this session, Ms. Bakare will share her journey and the important work in which she is engaged.
