Dr. Gerald Minuk earned his MD degree in 1975 and completed his Internal Medicine fellowship in 1979 at the University of Manitoba. He then undertook two years of sub-specialty training in Hepatology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. His first academic appointment was at the University of Calgary, where he founded and led Canada’s first Liver Diseases Unit for five years. He later returned to the University of Manitoba, establishing the Section of Hepatology and serving as the inaugural Albert Morberg Chair in Liver Disease Research. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Manitoba.

Over his career, Dr. Minuk has served as President of the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver (CASL) and contributed to numerous committees of the AASLD, AGA, and national granting agencies. He has mentored more than 100 trainees, including Hepatology fellows, Master’s and PhD students, and post-doctoral fellows, and has authored over 350 peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters.

His research has focused on the prevalence and natural history of acute and chronic liver diseases in Canadian Indigenous populations, the effects of neurotransmitters on hepatic regeneration and tumor growth, and the molecular mechanisms underlying the malignant transformation of hepatic stem/progenitor cells. Notably, he has maintained continuous MRC/CIHR funding as a Principal Investigator for 35 years.

In addition to his academic work, Dr. Minuk has a longstanding interest in innovative medical solutions. In 1985, he founded Compu-Consults, a company that developed software to keep community-based physicians up to date with advances in medicine. In 2018, he co-founded Refuah Solutions Ltd., which uses AI-driven tools to support clinical research among physicians and empower patients considering participation in clinical trials.
